A must see in Amsterdam, quite a great museum with a nice souvenir shop and a super nice space to sit down. Great gifts to buy there pictures, and objects from that time on several floors.

The highlight for me was and is the replica merchant ship, which you can visit. History that can be heard and recreated spaces like the captain’s cabin, where sailors have lived, pantry … very great and a wonderful view towards the city centre.

Amsterdam: Het Scheepvaartmuseum, National Maritime Museum

The Scheepvaartmuseum, or National Maritime Museum, is located in the historic Zeemagazijn building in Amsterdam, Netherlands, dating back to the 17th century. Originally designed by architect Daniel Stalpaert as a storage facility for Dutch navy ship equipment, the museum offers a captivating journey through maritime history.

Situated in the heart of Amsterdam and built in 1656 as an Admiralty storehouse, the museum building itself is a testament to the city’s rich maritime heritage. Visitors can step back in time by exploring a replica of the 1749 VOC East Indiaman ship named Amsterdam, providing a firsthand experience of the Dutch Golden Age.

The museum features immersive displays that bring sea travel to life, allowing visitors to interact with life-like exhibits. Activities include squeezing into the captain’s quarters, firing a cannon, and lounging in a sailor’s hammock, offering a glimpse into the challenges and lifestyle of sailors during that era.

For an even more immersive encounter, visitors can board the ship’s bow and embark on a virtual reality voyage over central Amsterdam. This provides a unique firsthand perspective on the bustling city harbour during the early 17th century, adding a modern and exciting dimension to the historical experience.

With a skip-the-line ticket, visitors can seamlessly enter the National Maritime Museum and explore the preserved maritime history and culture within. It’s an opportunity to be inspired by the rich maritime heritage of Amsterdam and gain a deeper understanding of its significance in the Dutch Golden Age.
